A comparison of pedagogy and andragogy will be presented, and I will discuss some first day of class team activities that I use to ensure my students that they will be supported throughout the semester, and to motivate and inspire them to transition towards a blended pedagogical and andragogical mindset. My approach deviates from the traditional approach of discussing the syllabus at the start of the first class. The first team activity consists of each team reading and discussing a motivational welcome letter. Additional team activities include discussions based on visual image prompts with underlying themes of success, support, self-directed learning, readiness to learn, respect for the learner, goal orientation and intrinsic motivation. The team activities are followed by general classroom discussions.
