Traditional written journaling assignments have long been used to promote reflection in online courses, yet many students experience them as isolating, repetitive, or disconnected from their peers. This session explores an innovative approach that combines short-form video reflection assignments with optional written prompts to foster stronger community, presence, and engagement in online learning environments. Drawing from implementation in asynchronous college-level science courses, this talk demonstrates how low-stakes video reflections, guided by intentional prompts, can humanize the online classroom, encourage peer connection, and support deeper cognitive processing without increasing grading burden. Attendees will learn how video-based reflections help students articulate understanding, share perspectives, and feel seen in the course, while still maintaining academic rigor. Participants will leave with practical strategies for designing effective video reflection prompts, integrating them alongside or in place of traditional journals, and scaffolding student participation to reduce anxiety and increase buy-in. Looking Ahead Before Looking Back: Using Pre-Flection and Reflection Strategies in Writing-Focused Courses Speakers: Dr. Stephanie B. Conner & Dr. Jennifer P. Gray, College of Coastal Georgia Asking students to reflect on their learning experiences during a writing-focused class may not be a radical idea; however, asking them to pre-flect and then reflect on their experiences with various writing assignments such as peer review is an approach that can help to set the scene for an effective writing experience and build student agency. We often rely on reflection to help solidify learning outcomes and deepen thinking about the writing process, but pre-flection is a concept that may not be used as often. In our session, we will detail an activity used in a first-year composition course that encourages students to think and reflect first, prior to a peer-review activity, which contributes to a more thorough learning experience that can guide revisions that happen during peer review. This approach moves away from relying on a prescriptive peer review activity, such as completing a worksheet or responding to sentence-level issues, to a more thoughtful and reflective experience with multiple drafts in the classroom community. Our activity casts peer review as more of a thoughtful conversation rather than a robotic response to a worksheet or disconnected activity for a grade.

This approach was used in a virology class, and it served as a foundation to introduce students to fundamental concepts in the field. Prompts were designed to teach students basic information about a subject, followed by in-class discussion and critical evaluation of the content. The COVID-19 pandemic prompted a shift to remote learning, offering students at UNLV the option to take Precalculus and Calculus either in person or through web-based live classes. While online learning provides greater flexibility, it also presents challenges, particularly in terms of student motivation and communication with instructors. This presentation explores strategies to enhance the interactivity and engagement of web-based live classes, emphasizing the need to adapt the structure and delivery methods used in traditional in-person classrooms. Drawing from my own experience teaching these courses, I will share techniques for creating effective online learning environments for Precalculus and Calculus at UNLV. Key elements of my web-based live Precalculus and Calculus classes include: • Pre-Class Preparation: Uploading lecture materials and corresponding videos in advance to allow students to engage with the content before class. • Historical Context: Starting each lecture with a brief historical overview to provide relevance and context to the material. • Interactive Problem Solving: Discussing the main concepts of the lecture and collaboratively solving challenging problems. • Proof Techniques: Demonstrating mathematical methods used to prove key statements from the current lesson (a critical element, especially with the rise of AI technologies). • Real-Time Feedback: Using audience response systems (e.g., Poll Everywhere, iClicker) to conduct interactive quizzes and polls during the class. Additionally, I’ve integrated dedicated discussion sessions into the course schedule. During these sessions, we not only review homework solutions but also explore how mathematical techniques can be applied to real-world problems. This approach helps students see the practical value of the concepts they are learning, bridging the gap between abstract mathematics and real-life applications in their future careers.

This presentation will cover an overview of my use of the flipped classroom in my calculus and statistics courses. I’ll cover the techniques I’ve found effective, the challenges along with strategies for overcoming them, and general “dos” and “don’ts” when setting up your own flipped classroom. Additionally, I’ll share information on my use of instructor-created course packets and how I have found these course packets to work well in conjunction with the flipped classroom. Research shows how the brain physically changes as we learn. Teaching students to learn how to learn while giving instructors the necessary knowledge to redesign their processes is key. We are not proposing a magic solution, but learning mediators are identifying effective tools that can revolutionize the brain for critical thinkers and harness self-regulated students in the process. Through scientific evidence, we can furnish opportunities, activities, values, and the necessary support from educators to identify the most effective educational practices. These identified activities form synapses and connections, besides granting frequent chances to activate related neural circuits that strengthen the brain.
