Johnny Texted, "He’d Be Late”: Designing Classroom Communities That Build Belonging, Grit, and Retention
Nicole Wilson, Bowie State University
Professor Tanya McInnis, Bowie State University
Students often say they dislike group work, and many instructors share the same frustration, especially in the writing classroom. This session provides information on how intentionally designed, semester-long classroom communities can transform resistance into responsibility. The presentation will draw on multi-year classroom data and lived teaching practice and show how teachable belonging fosters accountability, peer support, and academic grit that often extends beyond the classroom through student-initiated communication and collaboration. Even when some groups struggle, overall engagement and retention improve. Participants will leave with practical strategies for building community, modeling effective peer review, and cultivating connection in both in-person and online classrooms.
