Helping Students See the Point: Using Purpose to Make Learning Matter
Stacey S. Souther, Cuyahoga Community College
Students are more likely to engage when they understand why their learning matters. This session briefly introduces the Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT) framework of purpose, task, and criteria, then focuses on how the “purpose” element is a practical way to make relevance visible. Participants will explore how purpose statements can connect assignments and activities to course goals, students’ lives, future careers, and real-world situations. Through examples and a brief revision activity, participants will practice strengthening the purpose section of an assignment or activity so students can better understand the value of what they are being asked to learn.
