This presentation examines why instructors should reconsider assessment design in response to the growing availability of artificial intelligence tools. It will discuss the limitations of take-home exams, graded homework assignments, and online discussion boards. Conducting in-class assignments and exams using paper-and-pencil creates a clearer opportunity for students to demonstrate their own understanding of the material. The presentation will consider how Socratic discussion and short, structured writing tasks can give instructors a more authentic picture of student learning in real time. Attendees will leave with practical strategies for balancing academic integrity, student learning, and manageable assessment design in their own courses.
