AI as a Teaching Partner: Outreach, Feedback, and Student Support
Dr. Jesse Melvin, Rowan University
Artificial intelligence can enhance communication and connection between faculty and students through practical workflows. This session introduces two easily implementable approaches: 1. Proactive Outreach to At-Risk Students Generative AI analyzes course data such as attendance, assignment patterns, and grades to identify students showing early signs of difficulty. It then drafts personalized check-in emails aligned with the instructor’s communication style, enabling timely and supportive outreach without increasing faculty workload. 2. Streamlining Mechanical Aspects of Grading AI handles routine tasks such as formatting checks, requirement compliance, and grammar review, allowing instructors to focus more on substantive feedback that supports learning and relationship-building.
