On Friday, Oct. 22, during the Mississippi Association for Developmental Educators Conference at the Eagle Ridge
Conference Center at Hinds Community College in Raymond, two members of the Holmes Community College PreCore
Studies Department received awards from the association. PreCore Studies chair Stephanie Burton of the Goodman
Campus was elected president-elect while PreCore Studies instructor Margaret Bailey of the Grenada Center
was named the Vashti Muse Developmental Educator of the Year and was also re-elected secretary for MADE.
As president-elect, Burton will plan and organize the 2011 MADE Conference,
which will be the 30th Anniversary. After the conference, she will be the president.
The Vashti Muse Developmental Educator of the Year Award is given annually at the conference, and it honors
an outstanding developmental educator in the state of Mississippi. Bailey was selected by an awards committee
with the chair appointed by the MADE president. To be considered for the award, one must: be a member of MADE
for two years, must be endorsed by a department chair/ dean or instructional vice president; and must be a
full-time instructor teaching at least three developmental classes.
BURTON
Burton also is a mathematics instructor and serves as the Advanced College Enrollment (ACE) advisor at Holmes.
She graduated cum laude in 1991 from Mississippi State University with a bachelor of science degree. She received
her master of science degree from Mississippi State University graduating cum laude in 1997. She also has
additional graduate hours at Mississippi State. Burton received the 2008 Lamplighter award and the 2009 HEADWAE
award while at Holmes. She is a member of the following organizations: National Association for Developmental Educators
(NADE); Mississippi Association for Developmental Educators (MADE); Mississippi Collegiate Mathematics Association (MCMA);
and National Council for Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM).
Burton has two sons, Ethan and Noah, and a daughter, Jesse. She serves as music director of Main Street Baptist Church in Goodman.
BAILEY
PreCore Studies instructor Margaret Bailey holds a degree from Mississippi State University in English and the
University of Mississippi with a certification in mathematics. She holds a certification for Developmental
Studies from the Kellogg Institute in 2007. She received the 2009 Lamplighter Award for Holmes. Bailey taught
high school for 21 years before coming to Holmes, receiving the Star Teacher Award from the Mississippi
Economic Council three times. Bailey has taught as an adjunct instructor in the math department at
the Grenada Center of Holmes Community College for the past five years and as a full-time instructor
for ten years. She has taught English, math, reading, and study skills classes.
Bailey lives in Grenada, is a member of the Church of the Nativity (Episcopal), and is active in both the
Emmaus Walk and Chrysalis. Her son, Coley, 38, and his wife, Jodie, share in the family farming business.
Her daughter, Marie, 34, and her husband, Dean Lee, live in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. Marie is a Certified
Public Accountant for Simmons Foods. Bailey enjoys traveling, reading, scrapbooking, and knitting. NADE
2011 will be the 35th conference and held in Washington, D.C., February 2011. NADE will have
over 200 sessions for professional growth and development of developmental educators
